The one thing I ask from the Lord, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord, and to seek Him in His temple.
Psalm 27:4

I can't ever forget when one of my youth leaders and I sat down for a quick bible study in October of 2011, and he asked me a question that I didn't know would change my life: what do you want in your life? If there was one thing you want in your life, what is it? (well, something along those lines) My mind went wild thinking of all the answers. I want to be successful in terms of career and education. I want a nice house, a family, and honestly at that time, I really wanted an iPhone 4 and an iMac (so I could record songs, make vlogs and become youtube famous LOL). After a couple years, I declared this my life verse after realizing how much it had changed my desires and my mindset, and really, my entire life.

After I gave all my answers, he shared his answer of wanting a big glass garage, so everyone outside could see his display of cars. Someone else I've asked said he wants a whole wall in his house to display his collection of Jordans and Nikes. Another said he wants a whole wall to display all his crocs. I think I'd love a whole wall of guitars in my house.

On top of all the wants, there are things we need in life as well. Food, shelter, and money to have food and shelter. We need the security of love and belonging. We need health, safety and security. This list can go on and on of all the things that we need and want.

All these things are not necessarily bad things -- actually they're really good things that we should pursue in our earthly life. However, in Psalm 24:7, David goes so far to say that the ONE THING he needs, and the ONLY THING he seeks is to be with the Lord, to know Him, to be amazed at His beauty and glory.

The mindset of David is focused on seeking Jesus ALONE. When we realize how amazing Jesus is, not only would we seek and love Him, but He would become the ONLY thing that we would ever want and need. Our lifelong dreams and desires become nothing in comparison to knowing Him. Paul even calls everything else garbage in comparison to knowing Christ (Phil. 3:8).

At the same time, God promises that in following Him, we would be provided everything we need and more during our time on earth (Matt. 6:33, Ps. 37:4).  It becomes dangerous though, when our earthly needs and wants become greater than Him. When any blessing becomes greater than God to us (that's called idolatry btw), our "blessing" is more of a curse. At that, we should lay aside anything that hinders us, (Heb. 12:1, Matt. 5:30, Matt. 10:37) because nothing should be greater than God.

Let's have a mindset where all we want, and all we need in this life is to know, love, and be like Jesus. Nothing more, nothing less, nothing else than JESUS. Everything else will follow and be a fruit of having a relationship with God.
